Classroom Workshops

A SCI-FI workshop consists of a pair of our enthusiastic instructors visiting your classroom with a 120 minute presentation on a given science topic. Our goal is to present these topics in a fun, interactive way in a presentation filled with hands-on activities. 

For 2011, we've re-evaluated our workshop content from the ground up, incorporating close ties to Saskatchewan Education curriculum!

2011 Workshop Topics

For 2011, we've put a special emphasis on bringing closer ties between our workshops and  the new Saskatchewan Science curriculum. Our topics are:

Times & Locations

We are running workshops in 2011 from May 11 to June 22th. 

We offer two time slots per day for workshops: the morning from 9:30-11:30 or the afternoon from 1:00-3:00. The workshops are optimized to be 2 hours long, and are easily adjustable to account for early dismissals and recess.

Teachers must remain present in the classroom during the workshops for both legal and safety reasons, but do not have to participate in the workshop. All of our workshops are designed for regular classrooms, but Art rooms and Science rooms can be used as well. We bring all of the supplies we need for the workshop - if we have any special requests, we'll let you know ahead of time. 

We typically travel within the northern 2/3rds of Saskatchewan. If your school is in the following areas, please book on the indicated dates.  We will visit other areas based on our availability.

Cost & Payment

The cost of a workshop is dependent on the location: 

Off-Campus: $75 (we come to your school)
On-Campus: $65 (you come to the U of S)

Please don't submit payment until your class has been confirmed for a workshop (late April). AFTER we confirm your workshop date, payment is needed BEFORE we deliver the workshop. Cheques should be made payable to "University of Saskatchewan" with a comment about SCI-FI workshops. 

Registration

Notes about the workshop registration process: 

• In 2011, SCI-FI will have 34 instructors available to run up to 16 workshops each morning and 16 workshops each afternoon. This means that if your school has 32 classrooms, we could visit every single classroom in a single day!  
• We receive upwards of 500 workshop registrations each year which makes scheduling very difficult. For this reason, you are unable to select a specific date and time for your workshop. Instead, we ask that you indicate all of the days where you CANNOT possibly have a workshop, and we will schedule around those days. We thank you in advance for your flexibility! 
  
  • You can select these non-working dates on the final step on the online registration form.  
• Schools who are registering for more than one classroom must include each class on our registration form. To make confirming workshops easier, we ask that you select one contact person to book all of the workshops for your school.  

Steps to register: 

1. Find a contact person to submit all workshop requests for your school. 
2. Make a note of any non-working dates for your school. 
3. Your school's contact person should complete our online registration form, indicating dates that don't work to host workshops. 
4. SCI-FI will send the contact person a confirmation by fax and email in late April, once workshops are scheduled.
