Discover STEM: Girls Conference **NOW FREE**

2016 General Information 

When:  June 11-12th 2016.

Where:  Engineering Building (57 Campus Drive), University of Saskatchewan

What: A unique 2 day workshop-based science, technology, engineering, and math conference for girls in grades 7 & 8. The workshops (on everything from astronomy to microbiology!) will be led by young women in STEM who are passionate about their fields and want to share what they do and why. Other activities include a private tour of the U of S Observatory and swimming!  Thanks to generous sponsors this program is now FREE for the weekend (all meals included), The only cost is for the optional overnight stay (please bring a $50 cheque made out to the University of Saskatchewan to participate in the overnight portion of the conference).  

Purpose: Science is for everyone, but women are often under-represented. DiscoverSTEM aims to help girls discover, renew, or strengthen their passion for STEM fields as they prepare to enter high school.

Detailed Schedule for 2016:


Saturday, June 11th:

9:00 am: Check-in, room 2C40 Engineering. 

  • Ensure all paperwork is in order, get nametags, over-nighters will stow away luggage
  • Meet all the conference participants and get to know each other!

10:00 am: Workshops begin

  • Snack break mid-morning

12:00 pm: Lunch 

1:00 pm: Workshops continue

  • Snack break mid-afternoon
  • Time in The Makerspace: The Makerspace is a classroom full of materials that participants are free to use to design, and create anything they can think up!  Everything from LED's to casting materials will be at the participant's disposal!

4:30-5:00 pm: Go to rooms to set up for sleepover and get ready for supper.

5:15 pm: Supper at Marquis Dining Hall

6:30:-8:00 pm: PAC Activities (may include ROCK CLIMBING)

9:30 pm: Tour of the U of S Obsersvatory

11:00 pm: Home time for day participants.  Lights-out for over-nighters.

Sunday June 12th:

8:00 am: Breakfast in rm. 2C40.

  • Day participants are welcome to join us for breakfast, or come by at 8:45am to get signed in before the day starts. 

9:00 am: Workshops begin

12:00 pm: Subway Lunch AND "Girl Talk" lead by group leaders

1:00 pm: Workshops continue

2:30 pm: Wrap-up presentation, thank you's, and prizes in room 2C40

3:00 pm: Finished
